This special issue of the Journal of Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics (ESUKA – JEFUL), entitled Areal Linguistics, Grammar and Contacts contains a selection of articles based on presentations given at the international graduate conference of the same name held in Tartu, Estonia from 4 to 6 May 2012. It consists of 11 articles that approach the theme of language contact and diversity, and one regular paper. Topics covered include modern-day language contacts in various communities – between Estonian and Russian in Estonia, immigrant Turkish and Dutch in the Netherlands, Yami and Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan. The influences of Russian on Udmurt and Nanai in Russia are being discussed, as well as the emerging Polish-Russian mixed code in Lithuania; other topics include historical contacts and etymology, language revitalization, and typology.
